(Useful & Youthful) Sculpture Works:
In 2024, I began a pivot towards making more sculpture work alongside my photo projects. I take inspiration from my garbage, objects I find on the street, and objects in my daily life. All of my sculptures are doing one of two things:
Many times I make a sculpture it is because I want to answer a problem or solve a question. They are often humorous or whimsical in how they solve a problem, but they are always helpful. These are Useful Sculptures.
Other times I make a sculpture it is done purely out of childhood wish fulfillment. When I was small I dreamt I could build anything, but lacked the means or the creative wisdom. As an adult, I am slowly reclaiming these dreams by recreating these hair-brained ideas one by one. These are the Youthful Sculptures.
The Useful/Youthful dynamic reflects an inherent dichotomy at play in the design process. Oftentimes we hear of the battle between form vs. function, where designers must find a harmonious balance between aesthetic beauty and utilitarian functionality. Good design knows supposedly knows when and where to draw that line. Suppose we shift our perspective, and assume that good design is instead about finding the line between creating tangible solutions to problems in our world, and solving the ephemeral questions that we ponder in our souls?
Unlike my other galleries, you can expect this one to be updated periodically as new works are produced. Make sure to check back from time to time so you won’t miss it.
