All of the Greenvilles:

I am from a place called Greenville, a tiny little town down by the Indiana border with Kentucky. I have always been fascinated by the name “Greenville”. It sounds like the most generic, most nothing kind of name you could give a place, and I know I’m right because nobody in Greenville even knew why we were called that. There was nothing I wanted more in the world than to escape Greenville, to avoid the fate of becoming a lifelong Greenvillian. When I was small I looked it up and found out that Greenville might actually just be the most common name for a town in the United States. Almost every single state has a place called “Greenville”, and Indiana has three of them all by itself. In fact, there happens to be a community called Greenville located somewhere on every single continent, including Antarctica. With this in mind, Greenville seems to be one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan places on the planet, and I had no idea.

I decided that I wanted to see all of the Greenvilles, and that I wanted to carefully document each one in the process. The following is a long term photo essay around the world to seek out these locations and the new perspectives they bring. Lately, I’m beginning to feel like you can see the whole world without ever leaving Greenville.

All of the Greenvilles gallery will update periodically as this project is a work in progress.
